Auction House fun!

So I have big plans this weekend. I'm heading over to Kastner Auctions on Sunday. Yup, they are having a big auction that includes Show Home furniture from some of the big home builders in the area. I've only managed to see a couple pics and there have even been some things I like...

Sorry about the quality of the pics... it's the best I could do!

My favorite items thus far have been these chairs:

I think the colors would look nice with the stuff we have already, plus the detailing on these chairs is great. Beautiful tufting, and nailhead trim!!

This beautiful black, lacquered buffet/entertainment center would be really nice, and has a lot of purposes!

I also really like these woven chairs. Ideally, I would spray them black and add a more modern cushion, if I could get them for a steal, and they would be prefect for the entertaining area off the walk-out basement that I want to create!
This very modern-style glass table, reminds me a bit of the Eiffel table and would take up very little visual space, no matter where you used it!

These chairs have a funky upholstery that doesn't necessarily match with our stuff, but with a great shape like this, a couple yards of fabric and a staple gun, I could fix these in an afternoon!

There are all sorts of chairs and benches, which might be useful in putting together a new dining table, or even something for our future basement bar area...

There are all sorts of accessories as well, candles, spice jars, towels and duvets!

This dining table looks like the perfect replacement for the one I have now. It's solid, darker and looks like it has a leaf!

I love the Starburst mirror leaning against the table...a great piece for the front entrance maybe?

I really want a big, round mirror for above the dresser in my bedroom, I'll just spray this one black!

Anyhow, hopefully there is some reasonably priced wares and I can find something I love.... I'll post on Monday if I have any finds!

Just about finished!

So yesterday, I was off cause we had a full day. In addition to an early morning dentla appointment, I had an interview, and then we were off to the Home Design Center to choose our selections for the HOUSE!!!
Needless to say, we spent a good deal of time there... It was 4 or 5 hours actually....

First up, we met with the project manager and went over everything and clarified some stuff! Then we headed to the design center and made some selections. I am very upset, as I didn't bring a camera with me, so I had to rely on our camera phones, and the pictures look like crap!! Definetly not a true representation of color! Please excuse the crappy pics!

First up, we chose our cabinetry. We knew right off the bat what we wanted. Dark, espresso colored cabinetry. In our case, Lyptus wood in a color called Java! After selecting two door styles, we quickly both agreed on the same one. A little more upscale door, with a lovely bevelled edge on the panel. We both agreed they looked a little more upscale and custom!

Hardware was a little trickier. Cory liked something a little more industrial, and while I liked it as well, I didn't think it would look as great with the "fancier" style door we went with, so a sleek, brushed nickel tapered pull was selected!

Next came the floors. We both knew what we wanted. Unfortunately, it wasn't really the same thing. I wanted more dark, dark wide-planked flooring. Cory prefers a lighter color, with a lot more wood grain visible - in reality, what he wanted was oak flooring. However, we both knew that with animals, hardwood was not the best choice for us, so we went with a laminate, and in keeping with the theme of the cabinets, my choice of dark mid-sized planks, won!! (see wood floor sample below)

We also agreed to continue the same flooring throughout the entire main floor, including the entry, and the powder room, to visual extend the space. Which made a lot of sense.

The stairs and upstairs will be carpetted (despite my better judgement) and we selected a very low-profile Berber in this light cream color (it's a lot warmer than it appears in this picture). I've never had Berber before, so it'll take some getting used to!

For the upstairs washrooms, we will be adding tile to the flooring. Out of the whole bunch, I liked only one tile. It's very cool-toned and slightly blue-grey with lots of white showing. We'll also be using this tile around the fireplace surround for the meantime.

Back into the kitchen - We had dark floors, and dark cabinets, so it was time for some lightening up! Unfortunately, we chose not to upgrade our contertops, so we were stuck with Arborite (for now), but I only liked one... this speckled choice reminds me of a very cookies and cream look- and I think it will be great!! (fingers crossed). We went with a simple glossy white subway tile for the backsplash .

Last but not least, was the wall color... my biggest concern. Since this is going to be everywhere, I felt a lot of pressure, but theoretically, will probably be something we change periodically... and even in different rooms, so I was fine with my selection. A pretty grey color called Zepelin. It's much nicer in person!

One thing that we are looking into, is the kitchen island penisula. Currently, we are having it made into a raised eating bar, to accomodate our bar stools. However, after seeing some pictures and visiting a showhome of the same home, in a different community, we noticed a new upgrade. In place of an eating bar counter, they created a display bar area in the penisula that we love. It would eliminate the need for us to buy a separate sideboard.... and not having the barstools there, would free up tons of space!! We have to wait to get the pricing back.. but are seriously contemplating it. It would provide a place for me to showcase my bar ware, would provide storage for all our alcohol and provide me a little space for serving pieces and table linens!! Plus, with a built-in wine rack, we could store bottles for special occassions! I'm wondering if they can still do it, with a raised bar????

Anyhow, those are the selections for now... we still have to visit the lighting store, the appliance place, the audio store, the heating and air place, and a bunch of others, but I will remember to bring my camera next time.

Thoughts??

Making our Minds...

This week (Wednesday), we are meeting with our builder at the Design Center to make the selections on our new house. I am beyond excited. In fact, it makes me feel a little like I need to throw up - with how excited I am. There's a lot to do, and I know there is a lot of additional stuff that keeps coming up daily, that we want to add.... which I'm sure is going to get expensive and I'm sure that's why all the nervous-ness...

Anyhow, here's a rundown of what we're making selections on, and some of the stuff we'll be selecting:

Exterior: we made a deal with them, that we get to choose the exterior. AS this is a duplex, typically this is not allowed, but since we are one of the first buyers, they are going to use us as a starting point, as design the rest of the area around us. While we don't have carte blanche to choose whatever colors we want, they will have a selection of pre-selected combinations that we will have our pick from. I will be avoiding anything with red, and most-likely green. I am hoping something with cream and slate, or cream and blue... or something similar.

Doors: we have already made a change order to change the door from an almost entirely glass front door, to one with just a glass portion at the top, similar to a transom window. We will most likely be sticking with the sliding glass doors from the dining room to the deck and keeping the french doors from the walk-out to the basement.

Floors: Ideallly, we're going to go with a combination of tile and hardwood (or laminate). We have already written in a flooring allowance in our mortgage to allow this as it was one of my MUST HAVE upgrades. We know we want a very dark espresso walnut looking flooring through the main floor. We'd like to have tile in the front entrance and washrooms. A nice slate grey is always my first choice, but I am thinking a lighter creamy-color would look better with the dark wood.

Cabinets: We're going with a very dark chocolate, almost black color. While we need to see the options, we're pretty sure we're gonna go with a shaker-style door, or some other type of panelling, with chrome hardware as well. Something sleek, but not too contemporary.

Counters: We opted not to write in an allowance as we have selected to forgo granite. :( Sadness, I know. However, we don't want the expense on a house that will not be ours forever. However, if we have credit from any of our other upgrades, I'd like to look into a solid-surface material in a cream or white. I'd even be open to something that looks like granite with a speckled texture.

Backsplash: I have no idea what is available there. We did not like the mily-glass mosaic tile they had in the showhome.... so it's up in the air. Cory suggested something along the lines of white sub-way tile. I'm not against this... we'll see.

Wall Color: this is the one area I am not sure of what I want. Initially, I was thinking of something in a silvery-blue-grey tone, as it's my favorite color of all time. Cory wanted something similar to our current color, which initially I nixed. However, in looking at our current place... I'm re-thinking it, as all our furniture and artwork especially, look fantastic against the color on the wall. So we're leaning towards a the creamy beigey brown color we have now. However, since the rest of the selections seem to be in the "cool" color range... this will be dependant on seeing everything together.

Audio: We are opting to wire the house for sound. We'll most likely go with 2 speakers on the main floor. One in the masterbedroom, one outside on the deck, and either one ot two in the basement... (if one, the other will go either in the garage or outisde but downstairs by the patio from the walkout.

We've already had them move the location of our fireplace, as well as add stairs down from the main deck, and a concrete pad poured under the deck, where the patio will be from the walk-out basement.
Since we are finishing the basement ourselves, down the road, I gave them the floorplan of what we would like the basement to be used for, so that they can place the rough-ins and laundry areas in the correct locations. As well, we've raised the island eating bar, to accomodate our brand new barstools.

I'll be adding: a nicer dining room light fixture ( I don't do ugly ceiling fans) and adding cable and telephone outlets to the 2 spare bedrooms, as well as the basment. The only other thing I can see us changing at this point are our lighting options, when I see what's available....

Dream Patio Set

Yes, I've found it!! The outdoor dining set, that I may not be able to live without!!

Tonight, we decided to visit the brand new Walmart near our house since I desperately needed a new toothbrush. Fortunately, the aisles were laid out a bit different than the one we usually visit, so we did a little tour to acquaint ourselves, and right as we were heading out... I did a double-take and spotted my new baby.

Yes, it will run me $700.00, but I believe it to be perfect!! Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera, or a cellphone with me.... and couldn't even take a pic. Plus, after scanning both the Canadian and American sites... it's not listed!! BOOO!!!

Anyhow, Cory thinks the whole thing is too small for our future deck... but I think it would be perfect. In a brownish metal, with chairs for 6, an umbrella and chair cushions in a beautiful silvery blue, and throw cushions in a coordinating chocolate and blue pattern... It has won my heart.... I am going to do whatever it takes to get this set!!!!

I'll keep you posted!!!

One Room, Three Four Looks

I like the idea of featuring different ways to dress one room, so here's another installement ( the firelace mantels are different, but that would be easy to change as well).
This fresh, springy room is my favorite. I love everything in the room.... except the size of the area rug (again).... those people in the UK need a lesson on area rugs!! I am for sure thinking we need some sort of wallpaper around the fireplace in our new house!!
If you like something a little more reminiscent of the beach, this is it!!
For those of you who prefer a more, trendy, asian-vibe and aren't shy about using color.....
Lastly, a sleek, contemporary vibe that would be great for cocktails!
Again, all photos are Ideal Home

I have recently developed a love-affair with wallpaper. Keep in mind, that growing up, one of my first major design projects, was working with my mom on choosing and wallpapering, every room of the house.
However, seeing these new, contemporary, oft-metallic selections, makes me weak in the knees. I am hoping and praying that Cory will like one of my papers enough to commit to it on the walls.....

Ideally, I'd go for something really fun and funky... but I know that would freak him right out...so I am thinking that just adding some pretty pattern to add some visual texture, in fairly neutral tones, will be a start, and then maybe I can progress....
Here are some I am liking:

This light, beige and grey leaf bright is very subtle, but metallic to meet my needs. Plus, with a nature-inspired theme, might be a good starting point for him.

This pretty, muted floral is kinda what I'd like to see in the living room.

In it's brighter format, this pattern would make lovely artwork, framed in Ikea's RIBBA frames, with a big, chunky mat.

From Graham & Brown:

A more detailed version of the floral pattern above, love the little birds. I might try this in the powder room, since it's so tiny!!

Gossip Girl Set

Love the Van der Woodsen pad on Gossip Girl? Here's the scoop on the look, courtesy of Instyle.

Set decorator refers to the space as a "rejection of the conventions of the Upper East Side while still respecting many of it's traditions and values", which I think is a great decription of the space!

Living Room

The sofas are Desiron and are a great blank slate for colorful throws and pillows and are set upon a blue-slate rug. Since Lily's an avid art collector, there is no lack of colorful artwork in the space, like pieces from Jessica Craig Martin. Ralph Lauren armachairs sit on either side of a more modern-looking wire pouf side table. Other accents in the room include the blue vintage table lamps from Center 44 in Manhattan.

Serena's Bedroom

Wanting to ensure Serena's bedroom truely matched her personality, they used a lot of bold patterns and metallic touches. The walls are covered in polka dot Roma fabric, which I feel kinda give the room an eastern-vibe. The inciredibly elegant linens are a combo of Barbara Barry and L'Erba linens, available at Bloomingdales, and the silver cushions add to the youthfulness of the space. Most of the other pieces are vintage, including the nightstands and seatee. The clear Bourgie lamps are from Conran USA

Dining Room

The ABC Home dining table has a blue stone top and hammered steel legs, and is paired with Cherner chairs available at Design Within Reach . Below, is a Masrey carpet from Crate and Barrel .

Home Office
Sitting at the bottom of the stairs, Lily's workspace mixes refined with eclectic. The Eames chair and ottoman are fantastic pieces, especially when re-covered in Missoni fabric. The top of the desk and the desk chair were also covered in fabric - faux elephant hide!! The cowhide rug is from ABC Home and is a great contrast for the more traditional, Louis-style desk.
